If there was ever a Final Fantasy that set the norm for later titles, then it was Final Fantasy VI. Known only as Final Fantasy III in the U.S. , this was actually the sixth to be released in Japan. Released on the Super Nintendo (SNES) in 1994, this title would suffer many changes before it’s release in America, including the censorship of expletives and mild nudity that Nintendo of America had enforced. Despite that, the game heralded many of the features we see today in Final Fantasy, including the ATB system. Final Fantasy VI was also ported to the Sony Playstation and re-released as part of the Final Fantasy collection in Japan, and the Final Fantasy Anthology in the U.S. The port did not differ much from the original, save for a few added FMV cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game, and artwork.
The town of Narshe is under attack. Lead by Terra Branford, she and her Imperial controllers attempt to salvage a frozen esper. However, as they approach their objective, Terra Branford begins to experience a reaction to the esper. Leaving no trace of her captors, she awakes in the care of the Narshe elder. With the Imperial device that was controller her now removed, she learns that the Empire is attacking other nations and subjugating them under its rule. Knowing nothing about her past, she agrees to assist in the resistance against the Empire when she escapes Narshe and meets with Banon, the leader of the Returners. The Returners are the only militant group that oppose and are currently trying to undermine the Empire’s attempt at world domination.
